Back to School Blues

The end of summer and heading back to school can be a tough time for children, teens and their families. Many students will feel anxious and nervous about class work, new teachers and classmates. Here are some things you can do to help your child prepare for the new school year.

  • Try to get your child back into a school routine 1-2 weeks before school start. Have them go to bed earlier and wake up earlier as they would for school. Organize school supplies and backpacks ahead of time.
  • Talk to your child about their worries before school starts. It might be possible to do a tour of the school and meet their teacher ahead of time. Or, you may be able to plan a play date with other children in their class or grade.
  • Empathize with your child about how they are feeling. Change can be difficult but also exciting. Share a personal experience and how you reacted to your feelings of nervousness.
  • Share your concerns with the school so that they can help your child transition. Seek the advice of a psychologist if the stress of school is too much for your child.
